August Hermann Francke was a German religious philanthropist, born at Luebeck; was professor of Oriental Languages and subsequently of Theology at Halle; he founded various educational institutions and a large orphanage, all of which still exist and afford education for some 3000 children annually; he was active in promoting Pietism. Lived from 1663--1727.
